My Journey into this Sacred Work

My first experience with childbirth was when I was seven years old and witnessed my mother giving birth to my younger brother in a kiddie pool, in her dark, peaceful bedroom. It was magic. And yet, it was normal. It was that moment that brought me to the realization of how strong women are, and how courageous mothers are. My mother instilled in my bones that birth is innate, wild, completely normal, and that we, as women are capable of so much more than we realize.

I began my doula journey with birth doula training in 2018, and with my first client I immediately realized that the one postpartum visit I offered was not enough. It left me heartbroken to leave these women when I felt they needed me most. I ended up bringing meals to my birth doula clients for days after their births, which hurt my bank account but filled their bellies and hearts, which in turn planted this deep seeded passion and calling in my body and soul towards mothering the mother.

A Life Nourished by Food and Love

Food and feeding people have been passions of mine since I was a young child, always turning the channel from cartoons to The Food Network. It’s my way of showing those around me that I love them. In 2022, after spending time working on organic vegetable farms and cooking with the freshest of seasonal produce, I attended Ballymaloe Cookery School in Ireland, where I dove deeper into the beauty of cooking with sustainability, seasonality, flavor, and nutrition in mind. My health felt more vibrant than ever, and food tasted better than ever.

When I began cooking for postpartum friends and birth doula clients, I noticed how their meal train meals, although much appreciated, weren’t digesting well, leaving them feeling sluggish, heavy, and depleted. I began researching how new mothers traditionally ate and discovered Ayurveda. I found a course designed specifically around Ayurvedic postpartum care, and immediately signed up. Through this training, I learned about proper food combining, the benefits of warm, oily, soft foods for postpartum, how spices play a critical role in digestion, along with the art of ayurvedic belly wrapping, warm body oiling, and so much more. I have loved developing recipes with ayurveda in mind, but catered towards our western world and individualized digestive systems. I cook with homemade long simmered bone broths, nourishing ghee, fragrant spices, soaked grains, local meats, wild caught fish, seasonal vegetables, ripe fruits, and endless love.

It is my honor, passion, and calling to care for mothers. I believe caring for mothers is essential in our collective effort of healing the earth, because when mothers are cared for, they are better equipped to care for the new generation, which is the future. It is a ripple effect, and it begins with mothering the mother.
